Title: Accountant

Location: Fremont, MI (Hybrid)

The Accountant will perform routine general ledger accounting, assist in the creation of financial statements, and provide financial reporting and financial variance analysis. They will prepare journal entries on a day-to-day basis to properly record financial transactions, and assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, as well as additional financial reporting. They will participate in departmental initiatives and projects, working under direct supervision while being responsible for making an established range of decisions, escalating to managers, when necessary, and updating them on a regular basis.

Job Duties:

  • Perform routine general ledger accounting responsibilities for life insurance subsidiaries, on both a statutory and a GAAP basis
  • Assist in the preparation of routine monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and additional financial reporting for distribution to management, the Board of Directors, regulators, and rating agencies
  • Provide monthly financial variance analysis of selected general ledger accounts, and escalates comments to department leadership, as needed
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of effective processes and procedures for completing and improving work
  • Assist management in identifying and developing analysis tools necessary to help manage the business
  • Identify accounting issues impacting the company and notify appropriate personnel, when needed
  • Maintain working knowledge of current statutory and GAAP accounting principles
  • Complete fixed assets reporting, including analyzing Construction in Progress accounts, recording assets, organizing annual physical inventories, reconciling physical inventory report and fixed asset systems, retiring assets, preparing monthly depreciation journal entries, and preparing monthly fixed asset reports, such as Roll Forward Schedules, Construction in Progress analysis, Fixed Asset reports, and depreciation expense reports
  • Participate in the administration of unclaimed property reporting functions
  • Perform routine account reconciliations in order to ensure the integrity of financial data
  • Participate as a resource on special projects, including testing of new systems and processes
  • Leverage operational excellence to identify, evaluate, and implement changes to improve efficiency and reduce risk
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by management, while complying with all policies and standards

Job Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of professional accounting experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of statutory and GAAP accounting principles
  • Proven ability to analyze and interpret financial statements
  • Ability to cite examples of applications of accounting principles to business situations
  • Strong MS Excel skills, including experience utilizing V-Lookups and supporting large dataset management and reporting functions
  • Demonstrated, successful experience in problem-solving situations
  • Proven experience handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality, emphasizing the need to deliver quality products and/or services
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt communication styles and effectively communicate technical information to associates at various levels
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience communicating with large and small groups
  • Insurance industry background preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or other related field required; Master’s Degree in a related field and/or Certified Public Accountant (currently certified or pursuing certification) preferred
