Location: Houston, TX
Salary: $100,000 – $160,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications
Work Environment: Office-based

Job Summary:
Under general reporting to the General Counsel and as part of the Office of General Counsel (OGC) team, this entry-level attorney will provide general legal services to the institute. Responsibilities include supporting the management of contracts, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, providing guidance across academic, student, HR, purchasing, real estate, construction, intellectual property, and litigation matters, and assisting the OGC in delivering high-quality legal services to the institutes' stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field legal inquiries from educational institute departments and constituencies.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including purchase agreements, license agreements, inter-local agreements, sponsored research agreements, and construction contracts.
  • Draft responses representing the University’s legal position for internal and external matters.
  • Support record requests under TPIA, FERPA, and subpoenas.
  • Assist with policy, procedure, and compliance updates.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda.
  • Serve as liaison with outside counsel for litigation and non-litigation matters.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and local laws affecting higher education.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas.
  • Entry-level attorneys with up to 5 years of experience. Minimum 1 year preferred, including higher education or public agency exposure.
  • Transactional experience with public procurement preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws relevant to higher education.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Westlaw/LexisNexis and Microsoft Office.
