Communication Specialist – Deaf and Nonverbal
Hours per Week: 37.5
Pay: $44.00-46.00 per hour
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (30-minute lunch)
Location: Hybrid – Remote. Minimum of 1 in-office day per month required.
Travel Required: Yes – infrequent to various areas of Pennsylvania, primarily Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Other locations may also be necessary.
Seeking a dedicated and experienced Communication Access Specialist – Developmental Disabilities / Deaf & Non-traditional Communication Professional to join its Special Populations Unit. This role plays a vital part in ensuring individuals with developmental disabilities and non traditional communication methods have access to meaningful communication supports that promote choice, safety, and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess capacity and statewide needs in supporting individuals with diverse communication needs
- Develop and implement strategies to improve services for children and adults with developmental disabilities
- Collaborate with internal departments, interagency teams, and external stakeholders
- Create accessible resources and training materials for a wide range of audiences
- Deliver presentations, consultations, and technical assistance to state staff, providers, families, and agencies
- Monitor communication supports to ensure individual needs are met
- Build capacity across systems in communication and behavioral supports
- Support home and community-based services through partnerships with service organizations and families
- Perform additional related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Speech and Language Pathology, Behavior Analysis, or related field
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience with individuals with developmental disabilities
- Minimum 5 years of experience supporting individuals using sign language, tactile sign, visual-gestural, AAC, or other communication systems
- At least 2 years of experience with behavior assessments and support plans
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
- Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills
- American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency strongly preferred
- Relevant leadership experience is highly desirable
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

- This is a hybrid role with occasional in-person work and monthly travel
