Epidemiologist Availability
- M-F 8am-4pm
- Remote – must be located within 2 hours of Harrisburg
Epidemiologist Compensation
- The pay for this position is $50.00-$55.00 an hour depending on experience
- Benefits are available to full-time employees after 90 days of employment
- A 401(k) with a company match is available for full-time employees with 1 year of service on our eligibility dates
Epidemiologist Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with programs at Bureau of Epidemiology, Bureau of Laboratories and local health departments or other local governmental entities.
- The genomic epidemiologist will apply a wide understanding of next generation sequencing (NGS) methodologies, pathogen genomics, data analysis and integration to generate reports and visualizations and disseminate results to relevant partners.
- There are various uses for sequencing data, including surveillance, outbreak investigation, and clinical diagnostics, which involve careful interpretation by genomic epidemiologists. Depending on the specific sequencing purpose, investigative questions asked, or the epidemiological application of genomic interpretations, genomic epidemiologists will work and share results with a wide variety of partners.
- Coordinate advanced molecular detection initiative efforts between Bureau of Epidemiology programs, Bureau of Laboratories, local partners and CDC.
- Engage with the molecular epidemiology community and the national and regional technical support resources, including but not limited to, participating in trainings/webinars, conferences, and knowledge exchanges.
- Plan and develop bioinformatics pipelines and analytics for communicable disease surveillance and epidemiology in collaboration with BOL’s bioinformaticians.
- Conduct data quality assurance, including data cleaning and developing data quality reports, and troubleshooting data inconsistencies.
- Utilize statistical programming software and genomics and clustering analysis tools (e.g., SAS, R, NCBI tools, or MicrobeTrace) to lead genomic data analyses projects.
- Identify, research, and test new software to determine utility and potential applications for comparative genomic analysis, pathogen evolutionary analysis, pathogen characterization and sequence data visualization.
- Conduct data integration by matching and merging records across complex data sources (e.g., genomic datasets, disease reports in local/state notifiable condition systems, laboratory data, Medicaid claims, and electronic health records data).
- Conduct data quality assurance, including data cleaning and developing data quality reports, and troubleshooting data inconsistencies.
- Create data visualizations and dashboards (e.g., using Power BI or Tableau) for internal and external audiences.
- Develop reports and written summaries for internal and external audiences.
- Present findings to technical and lay audiences.
Epidemiologist Requirements
- Possession of either a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in epidemiology, Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO), Dental Surgery/Medicine (DDS/DDM/DMD), or Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system
