Job Title: Laboratory Specimen Processing Technician
Location: Detroit, MI
Compensation: $17 per hour
Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Overview:
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Laboratory Specimen Processing Technician to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing patient specimens for laboratory testing with a focus on pre-analytic and post-analytic processes. This position requires a professional who can ensure accuracy and confidentiality in handling patient information while supporting the lab’s daily operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and process patient specimens for lab testing, adhering to established procedures.
- Accurately enter patient demographic and test order information into lab systems.
- Deliver exceptional customer service when interacting with patients, co-workers, and healthcare providers.
- Review and resolve discrepancies on laboratory request forms, ensuring sample integrity.
- With proper training and supervisor approval, perform CLIA-waived tests and report results.
- Follow departmental policies on quality, safety, and infection control, contributing to a safe workplace.
- Assist in training new employees and students as needed.
- Occasionally perform blood sample collection/phlebotomy, upon competency approval.
- Provide instruction to patients and healthcare staff on proper specimen collection methods.
- Perform various clerical tasks, specimen transport, and operate lab equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Experience in a hospital or clinic laboratory is preferred.
- Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus.
- Clerical experience, including knowledge of Epic or other EMR systems, is preferred.
- Experience with assessing, billing, and reviewing prior authorizations is a strong plus.
