Job description:

We are seeking a trained and experienced Cast Specialist to join our orthopedic team. This role involves assisting healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality patient care, with a focus on casting duties. The Cast Specialist will be responsible for preparing, applying, and removing casts and splints, as well as assisting with orthopedic procedures and patient education. This position requires expertise in various casting materials and orthopedic appliances and a strong understanding of anatomy and physiology.

  • Pearland TX 77584 United States
    • Schedule: Varies based on Clinic needs
    • Part Time 20hrs per week

Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Cast Specialist) Salary/Wage:

  • 17.00$/hr. – 20.00$/hr. (Based on Experience)

Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Cast Specialist) Duties:

Casting & Splinting:

  • Under the direction of a physician, prepare, apply, remove, and adjust casts and splints as prescribed.
  • Assist with orthopedic procedures, including wound care and fracture reductions.
  • Prepare and apply orthopedic appliances, including durable medical equipment (DME) such as pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods.

Patient Education & Care:

  • Instruct patients on cast care and the proper use of orthopedic appliances, including walking with casts, braces, and crutches.
  • Conduct specialized measurements for custom brace fittings.
  • Provide patient guidance on traction equipment, adjusting or repairing as needed.

Orthopedic Support:

  • Prepare traction setups and assist in assembling fracture beds using pulleys, ropes, and frames as instructed by the physician.
  • Assist in monitoring patients in traction and ensuring proper equipment adjustments.

Inventory & Equipment Management:

  • Maintain a clean and organized cast and soft goods room.
  • Order and manage inventory of special supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and appropriateness of DME based on patient volume.

Data Collection & Billing Support:

  • Coordinate the collection of patient data required for the billing of specialty equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Support continuous quality improvement efforts within the clinic/department.

Team Collaboration & Other Duties:

  • Foster positive customer and peer relations, maintaining professional and supportive interactions with all team members.
  • Demonstrate acceptable productivity, cost containment practices, and teamwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the physician or management.

Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Cast Specialist) Required Qualification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (required)
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
  • Expertise in the application of casts, splints, and braces, as well as knowledge of various casting materials
  • At least 1 year of experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical practice setting (required)

Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Cast Specialist) Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to assist patients and perform necessary tasks in a clinical setting that may require physical effort, such as lifting and positioning patients, and using orthopedic equipment.

Orthopedic Medical Assistant (Cast Specialist) Education:

  • High school diploma (required)
