Job Description:
The Patient Benefits Representative is responsible for obtaining and verifying insurance coverage information, educating patients on insurance benefits and financial assistance programs, and ensuring that all required paperwork and authorizations are completed prior to treatment. This position involves interacting with patients, clinical reviewers, and financial aid providers to ensure a smooth process for insurance pre-authorization, referral approvals, and patient billing.
Patient Benefits Representative Schedule & Location:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Mesquite, TX 75150, United States
Patient Benefits Representative Salary/Wage:
$24.00 - $26.00 per hour
Patient Benefits Representative Duties:
- Obtain and verify insurance coverage information and patient demographics prior to treatment.
- Educate patients on insurance coverage, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses.
- Assess patients' ability to meet expenses and discuss payment arrangements, including financial assistance programs.
- Complete Patient Cost Estimate forms based on diagnosis and insurance coverage.
- Obtain insurance pre-authorization or referral approval codes from Clinical Reviewers.
- Review patient account balances and notify front desk of patients needing to meet with staff for payment collection.
- Ensure correct co-pay amounts are entered into the system for accurate billing.
- Verify and update patient demographics and insurance coverage during each visit.
- Maintain current knowledge of available financial assistance programs and build professional relationships with providers.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and confidentiality laws regarding patient records.
- Maintain updated manuals, logs, forms, and documentation.
- Perform additional duties as requested or assigned.
Patient Benefits Representative Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum three (3) years of patient pre-services coordinator or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Knowledge of CPT coding and HCPCS coding.
- Strong verbal communication skills and knowledge of insurance terminology.
- Must complete required e-learning courses within 90 days of starting the position.
Level Sr Qualifications (In addition to Level 1 requirements):
- Associate's degree in Finance, Business, or four years of revenue cycle experience preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of pre-services coordinator experience and two (2) years of patient benefits experience.
- Ability to apply knowledge of insurance coverage benefits and terminology appropriately.
Patient Benefits Representative Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s degree in Finance or Business preferred for senior level.
