Job Title: Scientist 2 - Polymer Scientist
Location: Research Triangle Park, NC
Pay Rate: $41.67/hr
Schedule: 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week, onsite role (8am - 5pm)
Job Description:
We are seeking a research scientist to join our R&D team focused on identifying, developing, and testing new technologies for a range of medical devices, including surgical and interventional devices. The team is particularly focused on the chemical and materials aspects of these devices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop new chemical formulations and biomaterials (e.g., hydrogels, coatings, resorbable polymers, viscoelastic materials).
- Conduct chemical functionalization of materials and determine their physico-chemical properties using various instrumentation methods.
- Assess functional performance of materials both in-vitro and in-vivo.
- Collaborate with team members from diverse backgrounds to plan and conduct scientific experiments.
- Analyze, interpret, and present experimental results effectively.
- Adapt to changing requirements in a dynamic work environment and contribute intellectually to areas beyond your field.
Requirements:
- Graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) or equivalent work experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Textile Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Hands-on laboratory experience with various polymers, biomaterials, and formulations.
- Experience in designing and developing polymeric materials-based solutions for biomedical or pharmaceutical applications.
- Proficiency in characterizing formulations, polymers, gels, polymer blends, emulsions, particles, biomedical polyesters, and other viscoelastic systems.
- Experience operating materials characterization tools such as rheometer, Instron, DSC, GPC, and spectroscopic methods, and interpreting the data.
- Research experience during graduate school or post-graduation is required.
Preferred Skills:
- Prior work experience in a medical device R&D organization is a plus.
- Experience developing test methods to assess biomechanical performance of prototypes.
- Knowledge of polymer processing methods (e.g., extrusion, thermoforming, 3D printing) and resorbable materials.
- Experience in designing preclinical studies and interpreting the data.
- Basic synthetic chemistry experience (small molecule or polymer synthesis).
- Willingness to work occasionally with biological specimens (e.g., animal tissues) for lab-scale testing.
- Ability to design, execute, and document experiments.
- Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
- Ability to effectively interpret and present scientific results.
