POSITION SUMMARY:
  • This position is responsible for compounding sterile medication under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and Quality Assurance personnel.
  • The compounding technician is also responsible for managing the inventory of supplies and maintaining a clean and highly organized clean room and lab.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Use of personal protective equipment.
  • Complete in-house nonsterile and sterile compounding courses.
  • Complete gowning training.
  • Pass gowning validation with fingertip and body sampling.
  • Successfully complete 3 media fill trials annually.
  • Successfully complete 3 post media fingertip samples annually.
  • Complete and pass the test for nonsterile and sterile compounding course upon training and then for sterile training annually thereafter.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Follow proprietary formulations to compound commercially unavailable products into the appropriate dosage form.
  • Properly use all equipment in the lab that is necessary to make the compound.
  • Clean all dishes and equipment after use.
  • Cleaning of the sterile lab using the appropriate disinfectants and techniques.
  • Ensure the compounding lab is cleaned and maintained according to procedures.
  • Maintenance, calibration and proper documentation of scales, electronic meters, etc. 
  • Routinely checking for outdated or soon to expire chemicals and compounded products.
  • Document all required information on logged formula worksheets for compounds.
  • Complete compounding continuous education responsibilities.
  • Attend educational meetings as required.
  • Work closely with the pharmacist in charge to ensure a quality product is being compounded that meets the specifications for cGMP.
  • Standards for strength, quality, purity, integrity, sterility and endotoxin content must be consistently met.
  • Monitors inventory levels and alerts the technician supervisor of low levels.
  • Don required garb correctly.
  • Dispose of chemicals in the proper containers.
  • Document quality procedures to check equipment or procedures in the appropriate logs.
  • Prepare samples for testing and retains.
  • Submit a QRE for any deviations of standard procedure or product.
  • Post lot fingertip sampling and environmental sampling as requested.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of USP 795, 797, and cGMP FDA 503B Guidelines.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and pharmacy calculations.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a timely manner with close attention to detail.
  • Must be capable of working with small, delicate pieces of expensive equipment to complete appropriate dosage forms.
  • Must be capable of donning and wearing all protective wear as required by procedure for each area. This includes, but not limited to: scrubs, sterile mask, sterile gloves, sterile gown, hairnet, goggles and shoe covers.
  • Sterile garbing must be performed in a manner that prevents nonsterile objects from touching the sterile garb.
  • Must have knowledge of basic principles, theories, laws, policies, and procedures that pertain to compounding and cGMP.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Arizona pharmacy technician licensure in good standing.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of compounding and/or aseptic processing experience.
  • National certification and state licensure current and in good standing
  • The physical demands and work environment are characteristic of those found in a typical laboratory environment.
  • There is potential exposure to chemicals used in the preparation of compounds and cleaning agents used in the facility.
  • This position will require the ability to sit in an office or stand for an extended period of time.
  • It also will require enough physical dexterity and fine motor skills to type, manipulate syringes, and work with delicate equipment and devices.
  • The physical demands and work environment require enough flexibility and strength to undergo donning sterile garb from head to foot with all skin covered.
  • Ability to pass medical clearance to wear an OSHA 95 respiratory mask.

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Adequate vision for tasks assigned.
