Assistant General Counsel Highlights

Responsibilities
- Respond to a wide range of legal inquiries from departments across the institution
- Draft, review, revise, and negotiate contracts including purchase agreements, license agreements, interlocal agreements, sponsored research agreements, and construction contracts
- Assist the Office of General Counsel (OGC) with contract management and compliance initiatives
- Draft official legal responses on behalf of the institution to enforcement agencies and adjudicatory bodies
- Oversee and coordinate timely responses to records requests and subpoenas, including compliance with:
- – Texas Public Information Act (TPIA)– Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Support development and revision of institutional policies, procedures, and compliance documentation
- Represent the OGC in administrative proceedings, investigations, student disciplinary matters, internal grievances, and termination hearings
- Conduct legal research and analysis and draft legal memoranda
- Draft correspondence, reports, and communications on behalf of the OGC
- Serve as liaison with outside counsel on litigation and non-litigation matters
- Stay current on federal, state, and local legal developments impacting higher education
- Perform other job-related duties as assignedRequirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas
- Entry-level attorney with 0–5 years of experience
- Minimum 1 year of legal experience preferred , including experience with:
- – Higher education institutions, or– Public agencies
- Transactional legal experience and familiarity with public procurement preferred
- Strong legal research skills using Westlaw and/or LexisNexis
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based research tools Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws applicable to public universities
- Understanding of compliance requirements, policies, and procedures
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- High degree of integrity, discretion, and sound judgment
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with OGC leadership
